CHAPTER 6

* * *

DESCENT INTO EVIL:

HOW PRIESTS BECAME ABUSERS

Having explored seminary life in some detail, we can now return to the important question posed in the Preface: Why exactly did seminaries predispose so many priests to molest children? To address this question we will first review current scientific thinking about abusive behavior in general, and then consider how this might apply to priests in particular.

Given the huge harm done to so many victims by predatory priests, some readers may find the discussion that follows distasteful; in seeking to identify developmental experiences that could have predisposed these men to commit abuse, it may seem like an attempt to excuse their behavior. That is absolutely not the intention. Such behavior was, is and always will be inexcusable. The sole purpose of this chapter is to understand what may have caused priests to act as they did, so that such actions can be prevented in the future.
